As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and what better way to embrace the rainy season than with a fun and educational water activity for your preschooler? At Kids 360° Early Learning Center, we’re always looking for creative ways to engage young minds while promoting movement and learning. This simple activity requires just a few household items and can be done indoors, making it perfect for those rainy spring days.
To get started, gather different-sized cups, measuring spoons, measuring cups, and various-sized bowls. You can set up the activity on the floor using a large clear container with towels underneath to catch any spills, or on a table where your little one can easily reach it. If you would like the activity to be outside, go for it!
Fill up some of the cups and bowls with water, and show them the different measuring spoons and cups they can use to transfer the water from bowls to cups and vice versa. It’s ok if they spill! This is all part of the learning experience. Your child will experiment with the spoons to see which is easiest to transfer the water. Another learning aspect is to see what happens when your kiddo pours too much water into a bowl. This is where being outside or having a towel under the main container is handy.
To add an extra element of fun and learning, consider adding food coloring to the water to teach about primary colors and mixing colors. Primary colors include red, blue, and yellow, and mixing them creates secondary colors like purple, orange, and green.

Playing with water offers numerous benefits for children aged 3-5 years old. Firstly, it provides sensory stimulation, allowing children to explore different textures, temperatures, and movements. This sensory play helps develop fine motor skills as children pour, scoop, and transfer water between containers using various tools. Additionally, water play encourages creativity and imagination as children experiment with mixing colors and different sized cups/spoons. It also promotes cognitive development as children learn about concepts such as volume, measurement, and cause and effect.
Furthermore, water play offers a valuable opportunity for children to engage in open-ended, child-led play. This type of play fosters independence, decision-making skills, and problem-solving abilities as children explore and discover at their own pace. It also promotes social interaction and cooperation if multiple children are playing together, encouraging communication, sharing, and teamwork.
At Kids 360° Early Learning Center, we understand the importance of providing enriching and engaging activities that promote holistic development in young children. Whether it’s through water play, movement-based learning, or creative exploration, we strive to create an environment where children can thrive and reach their full potential.
